(Beware, spoilers below!)
Man, Brooklyn Nine-Nine knows how to do the best starting scenes. The episode centers around the Detectives-only getaway: DOG party. Jake finds out that Captain has never been invited to a getaway since he was a gay black detective and so invites him. The whole detective squad giggles and bonds whilst they’re cautious of what the Captain’s ability to kill the party. After a few awkward uncomfortable encounters Jake decides to throw an alternate party downstairs away from the Captain. It works initially, but with Amy drunk on six drinks the plan falls apart and Holt quickly finds out.
Jake goes to talk the Captain, intending to apologise, (setting up the great line) “I’m not a child, I don’t need a bubble bath”, but the Captain apologises first for getting in on their getaway, spoiling it. In a stroke of ingenuity, Jake decides to spin it around and make the Captain part of the fun, making up a game where the contestants have to guess if the Captain said the his deadpan phrases or not.
The first 2015 episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine goes by in a flash of fun and laughs, so much so that the B-plot of Rosa getting Boyle to help her text Holt’s nephew barely has time to breathe. We’re all aware of the strange work getaways and bonding experiences, so it’s fun to see the already hapless Nine-Nine crew do it their way. Much props to Andy Samberg, Melissa Fumero and Chelsea Peretti for some great delivery this season. What a great start to the year.
