Modern Family, Season 6 Episode 14 Review: “Valentine’s Day 4: Twisted Sister”

(Beware, spoilers below!)

The three families work through a rocky Valentine’s Day: Gloria’s sister is visiting, Claire and Phil try to rekindle a romantic day and Cam and Mitch try to steal back a painting they gave to a friend. When Jay accidentally gives Gloria’s sister a pretty trinket he suspects that her sister is going after him. She convinces the family that everything is just a happy coincidence, but with the help of another baby monitor Gloria finds out that her sister really is out to steal Jay.

With the help of the ulterior character ‘Juliana’ Claire makes it really fun day for Phil, until she’s afraid he’s actually fallen for the alter ego. But this is Phil we’re talking about… and she needs to give him a little more credit. Cam and Mitch work together to steal back the painting that they planned to give to their fancy friend. After some hilarious decisions of comparison the pair eventually manage to steal back the painting they wanted.

Focusing on the relationships in the family, this episode of Modern Family is sweet if not as funny as some in the past. The chemistry and dynamic between Phil and Claire steals the show this time around, though it was a hoot to see Brooklyn Nine-Nine alum Stephanie Beatriz pop up once more as Gloria’s sister. Though the kids usually provide some fun in the show this time around their absence wasn’t much of a loss, though the ever growing relationship between Jay and Manny continues to endear. Kudos to the show for showing the variants of Valentine’s Day – even if they could have done a little more with it.
