(Beware, spoilers below!)
In Modern Family Jay is unhappy about how he looks in his Costco card but he’s agreed to help fill in for Cam’s bowling team. Phil is having trouble selling a house because of the pornographic statue across the street. Gloria and Cam decide to go out with Haley but they eventually realise how old they are in comparison because they get so tired.
In the bowling alley Cam spins lies in order to convince his nemesis that Jay is gay – and it works, that is… until Jay admits he’s not gay. At dinner with the neighbours it all seems to be going well until they disagree with the neighbours about getting rid of the statue. Claire realises that they need to get rid of the statue, but Phil resists and locks himself in the truck. However he accidentally backs up over the statue and ends up pretending he didn’t do it to a cop.
This week’s episode of Modern Family was endearing as all three storylines tackled the idea of respect and what it means to age gracefully. For all Jay’s grumpiness at the news, he actually has a lot of respect for Cam’s competitive streak and for his arch-rival. Phil and Claire too managed to finally bond with the their neighbours by actually letting loose their rebellious side which they generally repress. By contrast the Gloria and Mitch story is much less persuasive in that its nuances are less pronounced than in the other stories. However, in general this made for a great and funny episode which was enjoyable enough.
