The Flash, Season 1 Episode 20 Review: “The Trap”

(Beware, spoilers below!)

This week on The Flash we pick up right where we left off. The team reels in the fact the newspaper date is in the future and they interact with Gideon, asking for questions. Just then Dr Wells shows up in the building but not before the final reveal that Barry created Gideon in the first place.

Eddie and Joe talk privately because he wants to ask Iris to marry him. Joe doesn’t have his blessing but they get called away but the trio with the new information. Barry finally reveals that he time travelled a while back a comes up with an idea. We flash back to the past, the night where Barry was turned into The Flash and Dr Wells asks Joe’s permission to save him. The team try to find a way to get into Cisco’s dream.

At the CCPD Barry has a strange time with his future knowledge. Eddie asks Barry about his future blessing and the latter agrees to talk to Joe. Cisco enters his past dream and reveals the truth… but not before Dr Wells calls him to warn him about a fire. He ends up advising Barry as to how he can save everyone and they end up having a strange conversation. Joe is feeling very guilty because he let Wells take Barry in the first place, but he tells him it’s all Thawne’s fault.

They set up a plan to get the confession from Dr Wells but Barry asks for an explanation about why Joe won’t give his blessing; it’s because he doesn’t want Iris to marry the wrong guy. Iris reveals to Barry her theory that everything to do with metahumans happened after the particle accelerator. We flash back again to Iris sitting at Barry’s bedside after his accident, telling him he has to wake up because he made their home like family again.

At S.T.A.R. Labs the exchange between Dr Wells and Cisco continues once again. When things get bad for Cisco Joe ‘kills’ him and it turns out to be Hannibal Bates – because Dr Wells has tricked them. The doctor reveals how it was all a set up from the beginning and Barry realises Iris is in danger. Eddie is about to propose to Iris when the Reverse-Flash shows up and is about to kill her when Barry shows up. Through a spark from the hand Iris realises it’s Barry whilst in private Eobard reveals his true identity to Eddie.

Back in the past we watch Eobard talk to a incapacitated Barry about how ironic it is he had to create Barry, and has been watching him grow up all these years. However, nothing is forgiven and he makes it very clear that one day there will be a reckoning…

This episode of The Flash finally bit the bullet and allowed for the big Wells reveal, lining up the various sides before the season finale show down. The game with keeping Iris safe is pretty old, but it’s clear even that status quo will be changing soon. Whilst it’s impossible to ignore the filler status of this episode the significance of the plot outweighs everything else, meaning that next episode is very much uncharted territory (a good thing). It’s good to see the show so confident in itself that it can drop the Harrison Wells truth bombshell so early before the finale, and it makes me excited for what this might mean for the last few episodes of the show.

Side note: Did anyone else notice the nod to Cisco’s future as Vibe when he put those goggles on? I couldn’t help but grin.
